Singles
Matchplay 2010 Semi-finals
|
[Wed
1 Sep 10]
|
The
2010 singles matchplay is progressing well and we have our first semi-finalists:
Harry Grimshaw and Jonathan
Williams (who is looking to get his name on the much coveted trophy for
the second time). Both players have battled through some tight games
on their way to the semis; Jonathan went to the 20th against Adam Kendrick
whilst Harry defeated Wally Triggs on the 19th at the RAC.
On the other side of the draw Mellin player John Schofield has also progressed
to the semis after a walkover from an injured Will Porter and will play
either Mark Burridge or Peter Wylie Harris.

David
Bluett
|
[Tue
10 Aug 10]
|
| It
is with great sadness that we report that David Bluett (2 North, 1951-55)
died on July 19 shortly after being admitted to hospital. David was
a legendary figure within the Old Cranleighan Golf Society, not so
much for his play but for his support and enthusiasm. This was especially
evident during the Halford Hewitt when he hosted his annual pre-tournament
cocktail party at his cottage. However, his generous hospitality may
not have always had a positive impact on the team's performance! David
on the other hand would shake off a hangover with a 'gin and french',
prop himself up on his stick, and head for the links to bellow his
support. David
will be greatly missed! |
|
A Memorial Service for
David will be held at School probably on Saturday 30th October (to be confirmed).
All O.C.’s are welcome.
Andrew Cronk has arranged a Charity Golf Day in conjunction with the Cranleigh
School Foundation, to be held on Wednesday 10th November at Kingswood Golf
Club. The aim is to raise funds for The Foundation and specifically for
a Rugby pitch in David’s memory. All O.C.’s welcome to attend and support
this event.
The O.C.G.S. are donating an engraved bench in his memory to Royal Cinque
Ports Golf Club, hopefully to be placed outside the hut at the 9th hole:
a favourite watering hole of David’s.
We are also intending to organise an annual match between O.C.G.S. and The
Choppers (O.C. Rugby players who play Golf, founded by David) for the ‘Bluett
Trophy’. Details to be circulated in due course.

OCGS
Putting - Royal Wimbledon
|
[Sat
26 Jun 10]
|
The golf society is holding
its annual putting competition at Royal Wimbledon on 7th July. All members
plus their partners are invited to attend and enjoy a sociable evening at
the Royal Wimbledon club, putting on the renowned (and interesting!) putting
green, used for the Public Schools putting event, and having dinner afterwards.
The putting competition is open to all and we hope that a large number of
wives/partners will take part. Dinner is also available for all non-competitors.
The format of the evening will initially be a stableford played over one
round of the putting green. The top 8 best scores will then progress to
a knockout stage, quarter finals/semis/final to determine the winner. The
other competitors will go into a plate event to establish the winner of
that competition. All players will, therefore, have a minimum of two rounds
competitive putting. Dinner will be served in the clubhouse after the putting.
The cost of the evening is £32 for competitors and £22 for diners only,
payable on the night.
The evening will start from 5.30 or as soon as players can get there! The
evening will be compered by David Willis. To enter please email Derek Lyons
at derek_l@blueyonder.co.uk (020 88761151) or write to him at 8 Firs Ave,
London, SW14 7NZ.

Halford
Hewitt 2010
|
[Wed
14 Apr 10]
|
|
Once
again Cranleigh endured a rather disappointing Halford Hewitt with
a first round defeat to Rugby 3.5-1.5. Hopes were high following
numerous trials including the new Sunningdale fixture but the OCs
were comfortably outplayed on the day.
Marcus Ferguson-Jones and Frazer Moore secured the only full point,
and it looked
at one stage as if Tony Whitty and Craig Moore would keep the match
alive but a couple of missed putts on 15 and 16 proved telling as
they lost on the 18th. Luke Parry and Martin Riddiford took
a half at fifth pair.
|
|
It was an encouraging
debut appearance for the Moore brothers and it is hoped they will play key
roles in future Hewitts.
A 2.5-0.5 victory over Highgate in the first round of the Plate offered
some consolation but this was followed by a second round exit to Radley
2-1. Radley went on to win the Plate beating Edinburgh Ac in the final.
Squad: M Connelly, M Ferguson-Jones, A Janmohamed,
A Kendrick, C
Moore, F Moore,
L Parry, W Porter, M Riddiford,
A Whitty, R Williams.

Brent
Knoll Bowl 2010
|
[Mon
29 Mar 10]
|
The
OCs sent a strong squad down to this year's Brent Knoll Bowl and eased
through the first round against the Wighorns 2-1. Round 2 proved a
tougher test as the OCs took on last year's winners the RAF. As anticipated
they were formidable and we succumbed to a 2.5-0.5 defeat.
Squad: M Crane, A Cronk, M Ferguson-Jones, A Kendrick, A Janmohamed,
N Ramatallah, M Riddiford, T Sweetland (Captain).
