The
Old Cranleighans enjoyed a good run in this year's Brent Knoll Bowl competition
at Burnham & Berrow with a rare appearance on a Sunday afternoon,
albeit in the plate.
A first round defeat against the Erratics was followed by a narrow victory
over the Old Shirburnians in the opening stage of the consolation competition.
It looked all over at one stage but Rosenberg and Crane fought back from
three down with six holes to play and finally won with a birdie on the
second extra hole.
Sunday morning's semi-final produced some fine play from Hansford &
Whitty and Riddiford & Ferguson-Jones who secured a tensely fought
win over local society the Buckthorns. This set up a clash against a traditionally
strong Army team but in the end the OC's fitness levels could not match
those of their opponents and the effects of five rounds of golf in three
days started to show. Some tired golf meant that the army prevailed 2-1.
All members of the team scored at least one point but Martin Riddiford
excelled himself, securing four wins out of four.
