A
squad of eight Old Cranleighans made the journey up to the North Norfolk
coast to take part in this year's Grafton-Morrish - Crane, Connelly, Hansford,
Parry, Riddiford, Rosenberg, Sweetland, Whitty.
After a day of intensive practice at Hunstanton and Brancaster on the
Thursday the team was up early on Friday morning to do battle against
a strong Repton side.
Crane and Sweetland maintained the fine form they showed in practice to
defeat Repton's top pair 3&1 in what was a closely contested match.
The second Cranleigh pairing of Whitty and Connelly started well with
two birdies in the opening four holes. The opposition, however, proved
too strong reaching the turn in level par before winning by a margin of
4&3. With the tie at one point apiece it was all down to the third
pairing of Parry and Riddiford, a Grafton-Morrish veteran. The match was
tight and an excellent up and down on the par 3 16th followed by a half
at the 17th meant that Cranleigh stood on the 18th tee requiring a win
to force the match into extra holes. Unfortunately the opposition produced
some flawless golf on the final hole and when Martin Riddiford's chip
shot slipped by the cup the match was all over.
Once again it was 'close but no cigar' for the OC team (except for the
two Cohibas smoked the night before). A postmortem on Thursday night failed
to reveal any particular reason why the OC's often fall at the last hurdle
but a bar bill from Thursday in excess of £700 could have been to
blame...
