HALFORD HEWITT 2005
[Mon 11 Apr 05]

The Old Cranleighans improved on their 2004 performance in this year's Halford Hewitt progressing to the 2nd round of the competition before losing to defending champions Tonbridge.

In the first round match against the Leys some exceptional golf from John Davies and Marcus Ferguson-Jones secured an early point in what became a somewhat drawn out affair. Slow play and diminishing light meant that three of the five games had to reconvene at 9 o'clock on Friday morning.

Despite this inconvenience the Cranleigh side were in a strong position and it did not take long for Crane & Sweetland and Parry & Rosenberg to secure the two additional points required to progress to round two: 3 ½ to 1 ½.

Such an early start on Friday morning coupled with a two hour wait in the clubhouse was not the ideal preparation for the second round match against Tonbridge. The team had also been affected by injuries, and Will Porter and Matthew Hansford stepped aside to give team captain Tony Rogers and Ben Parkes a game at 5th pair. Conditions had also deteriorated and a strong notherly wind was now gusting to 40 mph and many of the fairways on the front nine were now out of range.

Despite the adverse conditions there were moments of excellent play from the veterans Whitty & Riddiford but ultimately Tonbridge proved too strong defeating Cranleigh 4 ½ to ½. Once again the Sunningdale pairing of Ferguson-Jones & Davies produced some flawless golf and they were firmly in control of their game when the match was declared over.

It is some consolation that Tonbridge went on to win the event.
