Gordon
Taylor died on 30th April 2005 aged 73. Mickey Steele-Bodger, life President
of the East India Club gave the address at a service of thanksgiving,
extracts from which we quote below.
Gordon's childhood was happy and unremarkable except once instance when
Gordon and his younger brother Bob were playing on the Sussex Downs with
other children including two young Princesses who were on holiday down
there. They were later called away by their governess for tea but as they
left the older one gave Gordon a kiss. This left an indelible impression
on Gordon and ever afterwards those near him when the National Anthem
is played, will have heard him mutter, 'Betty, Dear Betty'. Now I have
watched the Queen on TV closely at state functions and when the anthem
is played her lips move but it is not possible to be sure that she is
murmuring, 'Gordon, Dear Gordon.' He remained coy on this subject all
his life, but the fact is he never married.
Gordon was educated at Cranleigh
